Changes to JMDWiki Comments

Jun2509Jun 25, 09

I'm about to push out an update for JMDWiki that will alter the way comments are displayed. Currently, they are shown in anti-chronological order, so the most recent comment is the first in a sequence. This was an illogical choice for a number of reasons. First, users typically want to reply to the most recent comment, which requires a lot of scrolling back and forth when that comment is the furthest from the input field. Second, when a visitor finishes reading an article and would like to comment on it, they are forced to scroll to the bottom of the page and then read the comments in ascending order (very strange). I do not recall the reasoning behind this decision when I was designing the comments system for JMDWiki, but it is clear there should be a correction. I strongly recommend updating your copy of JMDWiki to include this modification, as it encourages more active contribution from your users. The process is the same for all JMDWiki updates:

  1. Navigate to your website's Control Panel (
  2. Click on the Updates tab in the main menu
  3. Click "Check for Updates"
  4. You will see the list of available updates, click "Install These Updates"
  5. Take a look at the processes to make sure the updates went smoothly
  6. You're done! Click "Finish".

I would encourage you to stay up-to-date with the releases, because many of them include security fixes and performance improvements that are always beneficial.
